1st story video

Ethos: I wanted to come off as trying to be personally with the person I am teaching the lesson too by telling them a story that was told to me growing up.
Pathos: Audience reflect back on their own lives and have them think about if their family comes first. Because we really do need family in our lives

  1. haha it sounds like coach parent talking... but anyways, I think you were spot on with your ethos and pathos. The analogy you gave with your speech not only complemented you ethos and pathos, but I think it added to it. Although I think you could improve on you mechanical skills in the speech (fluidity and pronunciation to make it that much more personal) I think the story you tell illustrates the big picture, which is what you're trying to get at so it works out in the end.

  2. Tyler: This is a great story, and you tell it well. It's great to hear your voice! (It would be nice to hear it in class.) You tell it well, and you can do a lot with it.

Right now, I'm not sure I understand the ethos and pathos. You're a coach (right), but who are you speaking to?

By "ethos," I mean, "what qualities of yourself (as a coach) do you want the listener to see? It's clear that you are teaching, but this isn't really what ethos is. Teaching is your activity. HOw do you (coach) want to be seen?

By "pathos," I mean the emotion that the listener should feel, not ideas they should have. A good speaker (like this coach) aims to manipulate the listener's emotions. WHich emotion is he trying to manipulate here?

Let me know if this doesn't make sense. It's essential to what we're working on this year.

  3. I like the story :). The ethos that I'm getting is more of a father figure, because of the "life lesson" story. The pathos that I'm getting is more of a stunned reflection on my life (or the listener's life), taking stock of past decisions (in this case coaching taking president over family, love, etc). Overall, you delivered the story very convincingly.
